The attacks on the large enterprises such as Target and Home Depot have resulted in a lot of media buzz over the last couple of years. And while you might think that cybercrime is limited to larger operations like these big box stores, it’s important to note that the root cause of the breach was a contractor relationship with a smaller business partner that had access into the network.
In Target’s case, Fazio Mechanical, a heating, air conditioning and refrigeration firm in Sharpsburg, Pa., was hired to manage a partner billing application which was hosted by Target. One of the small vendors who accessed the billing system allowed malware to infect 1700+ point-of-sale systems and impact 70 million individuals personally. With cyber breaches, it’s not just information that’s at risk – your reputation is also at stake. The fact that we still know the name of the small vendor is not due to good advertising by the owner – it’s due to a simple and avoidable mistake. The rest of us would do well to learn from it.
